2 steps forward, 1 step back
It looks like Justin won't be seeing a GI doctor just yet. I spoke with Dr. Hirsch today and she did reach peds GI at Children's Hospital and they recommended Justin try Prevacid for a week. I guess Prevacid is pretty common for preemies with reflux as it decreases the amount of acid produced in the stomach. We're supposed to use this for a week and see what happens. When he started the Zantac it worked initially, like the first couple of days, and then he reverted back to his old ways. And then when the dose was upped it helped the first few days, but then it was back to the same old thing. Over the past week he's taken anywhere from 8 ozs one day to 19 ozs the next, with the average being somewhere around 14 ozs. So keep your fingers crossed this works and we can get some consistency going.

are they putting him on prevacid suspension (liquid) or solutabs?
ReplyDeleteThe suspension breaks down very quickly, so you may get the same thing - great for a week then not so great. Plus it tastes like crap so he wants to spit it out at you.
The solutabs are slightly more annoying to give just because you have to dissolve them in water and manage the beads, but they taste good and work better.
Robbie thinks it's candy.. and it has totally been our miracle drug. No more screaming baby!
Trish, I'm not 100% sure but I think the doctor mentioned liquid. They were supposed to be calling the prescription in this morning so I guess I'll find out tonight when I pick it up. If we have problems (which I'm sure we will because it's Justin) I'll be sure to ask for the solutabs.
