I love Justin's pediatrician
Dr. Hirsch had a chance to talk with Children's GI and they recommended we try Reglan. I was/am a little hesitant to try this new medication because 1) Justin has never been seen by GI or even officially diagnosed with reflux and 2) I've heard some not so good things about the side effects of Reglan. I mentioned my concerns to Dr. Hirsch and asked if we could possibly try Prevacid solutabs first. Initially she didn't think that would work, she mentioned something about the solutabs dosage being based on weight. I didn't think that was the case, as the solutabs were recommended to me by another preemie mom whose son is the same age and smaller than Justin (thanks Tricia). Since she's only had a few other kids, who were older and much bigger, use the solutabs, she offered to do some additional research and get back to me. She called today and she's writing a prescription for the solutabs. I'm keeping my fingers crossed it helps.

I'm the mom of a micro preemie and we tried Reglan once. My son only lasted two days. He was fidgety and would not sleep by the second day. He was screaming uncontrollably. He was then prescribed Prevacid. It worked sooo well. I switched to the suspension because I had trouble with the beads in the tabs, but some parents do OK with the solutabs. Only down side is that the only pharmacy for the suspension is usually a childrens hopsital pharmacy.

ReplyDeleteMy GI doctor kind of gave me the same schpiel for a while and kept Robbie on prevacid suspension for a while even when it wasn't working great.
The trouble with the suspension is that it breaks down SO quickly (a week or less) so it works great for a week, then loses effectiveness.
Some kids only need a small dose so they do okay on it, but Robbie needs the max dose and it just didn't work for him.
The solutabs are a MUCH better fit for us.
We don't have any problems with the beads. Every great once in a while one the solutabs doesn't want to dissolve quite right, but usually I can add some air to the syringe (ask your pharmacy for a few 10ml syringes) and shake really hard and get it to go.
Just FYI, here's a great website with the dosing for the various drugs.
