The occupational therapist with Early Intervention was concerned that Justin may skip crawling and go straight to walking and said that you don't want that to happen. When I asked why she told me that children who skip crawling have developmental delays later on. She specifically mentioned having problems learning how to ride a bike because crawling helps develop left-right coordination.
I know a couple of people who skipped crawling and as far as I'm aware neither of them have had any problems, so at today's OT session I mentioned it to Hilary and asked her thoughts on the matter. She agreed with the other OT and also added that mild learning disabilities have been linked to kids who skip crawling.
I've never heard of this before so I don't know what to think, so let me know your thoughts.
I think it makes sense. You develop your rhythm when you get the hang of right left..oposition. Walking also takes a lot of concentration - concentration that can be used on other things if I child is crawling to get around... they aren't fixated on not falling.. until the time is right to walk.
ReplyDeleteI never crawled and I never had any delays, in fact I did many things early (including reading at age 2.5). Our PT told us the only link they've proven is between not crawling and bad handwriting (but I also have good handwriting). Anyway, I thought Marino would skip crawling, too, since it was taking forever, but one day it just clicked and he started standing 3 days after!
ReplyDeletealot of people thought donne was going to skip crawling. he was standing, holding on to things while standing and walking along furniture before he started crawling. however..now he is crawling..just randomly happened one day. im not sure about the whole developmental issues thing if you skip crawling, i know other people who skipped it and they didnt have any issues. meanwhile...my 11 year old brother crawled and everything but he is too freakin chicken to ride a bike. not that he doesnt have the coordination...he is just a chicken! LOL. so you just never know.
