Sleep Training 101

I’m very fortunate that Justin falls asleep on his own for naps and bedtime, sleeps 12 hours at night AND sleeps in on the weekends. It wasn't easy getting to this point; the first few weeks of sleep training were rough.  Between the crying, screaming, lack of sleep, and countless vomiting episodes from his reflux I'm not sure who it was harder on, me or J.

But it was definitely worth it so I planned to start sleep training Nathan during the holidays when I had time off and wouldn't have to worry about the additional lack of sleep that goes along with it. However, with Lalla going back to work a few weeks ago, Carlene now has 4 little ones to watch during the day and wanted to have the boys all on the same nap schedule to make her life easier.  And who could blame her.

I braced myself for the worst but surprisingly it hasn’t been that bad. He fussed for about 30 minutes the first night and that was it.  Now when I lay him down he either plays quietly in his crib until he's sleepy or rolls right over and goes to sleep.  And like his big brother, he has the sweetest disposition when he wakes up (except for when he wakes up starving).  I usually hear him wake up, start talking to himself and quietly play in his crib until I come get him.

Now if I could just get Mr. Nathan to sleep for longer stretches at night.  He usually takes a 30 – 45 minute cat nap in the morning and a 2-3 hour nap in the afternoon.  But he’d sleep from 4 pm – 2 am if I let him. Don’t ask me how I know this. Perhaps it’s because I was too lazy tired one evening to wake him up from his nap, feed him dinner, give him a bath and put him back to sleep. How is that he can sleep for 10 hours when I don’t need him to, but of course when I want him to sleep that long he wakes up several times during the night.
Needless to say I'm still trying to find the right balance/nap schedule so that he’ll sleep well through the night along with J. I’d love to be able to put both boys down at the same time and get 10-12 hours of uninterrupted sleep.  Is that too much to ask?

  1. we are working on alexa's schedule, too. she totally knows what she is used to. last night she woke up every time we laid her in her crib, only to fall asleep the instant she was picked up. of course 45 minutes later she fell alseep instantly when i brought her to bed and nursed her. arghhh how do you break the cycle???

  2. Sorry to say: (about the 10-12 hours of uninterrupted sleep) It probably won't happen. Maybe hope to get 8 hours, with an occasional nap.
