We’ve tried a few things here and there since Nathan’s 2 year appointment in February but up until last month he’s still been very picky about what he eats. Well that is with the things that are good for him. Of course he’ll tear up some donuts, cookies, candy, graham crackers, gum, etc. However the only healthy new thing we got him to eat willingly was squeezable fruit/vegetables.
But last month I said enough is enough, this boy needs to start eating some meat and some hearty food for lunch and dinner. So I started off with spaghettios. Well of course he hated them, clinched his jaw so tight and moved his head constantly to avoid us shoving putting anything in his mouth. By the time we were finished he required a bath because he had spaghettios everywhere but his mouth. After a couple of days of trying he finally gave in and you know what, he realized it wasn’t even that bad and he started to open his mouth willingly. But after swallowing he gave us the biggest yuck/pout face as if we were torturing him.
That weekend we tried eggs; I snuck them in with his biscuit and surprisingly he didn’t notice. It’s hard to pull one over on him; in the past we’ve tried shredding new food finely and slipping it into his applesauce or yogurt but he spits it out immediately when he detects something of a different consistency than what he’s used to. Since he didn’t notice I figured I’d try the eggs without the biscuit to see how he did and he surprised me by eating them. Granted only 2 bites but hey, I’ll take it. So the next day I tried sausage. He fought the first couple of bites but eventually realized it wasn’t that bad.
So it seems like we’re finally making progress. Last night he willingly ate half a can of spaghettios with meatballs. I figured he’d fight me on it, especially the meatballs but I made sure I cut the meatballs into small pieces and he ate them with no problems. And even though he gave me the yuck face after each bite he opened his mouth for more.
Now on to vegetables, wish us luck!!!
